Although I'm not fond of mice my home, I have a soft spot for mice - and their relatives the voles - in the wild. Voles in particular are the snack of choice for just about anything that moves, from snakes to stoats, and foxes to falcons. They live hard, short and often brutal lives, but they are also quick, clever and engaging. While mice tend to be more nocturnal, voles can often be heard - and sometimes seen - scrurrying around in woodlands and on the edge of fields.
